Setting the breakfast table in a classic style
A relaxed breakfast can be the foundation for a successful start to the day. Here’s what you should consider when setting the table in the morning, along with how to add stylish touches.
The breakfast plate – the control center of every breakfast table
A breakfast plate is an absolute essential for breakfast – you can’t do without it. Its diameter is around 20 cm, making it significantly smaller than a standard dinner plate.
The atmosphere at the breakfast table
The breakfast plate sets the stage; now it’s time for the accessories. The coffee or tea cup, depending on preference, usually sits in the upper right corner, slightly offset from the plate. A saucer always accompanies it, serving as a resting place for coffee or teaspoons. This prevents unsightly stains on the table and/or tablecloth. If you prefer a mug to a cup, no problem. It works just as well in this spot.
Regarding cutlery: The fork is placed to the left of the plate; the knife and spoon (in that order, depending on what you need) are on the right. If you are also setting out glasses for water or juice, these go to the left of the cup. The egg cup and spoon are placed relatively centrally above the breakfast plate, and the napkin is usually placed to the left of the fork. And that’s all for the basic set.
Add small highlights to the table.
Of course, you can put even more effort into setting the breakfast table, depending on whether breakfast is during the week or on the weekend. Accessories or beautiful decorations such as flowers in a vase, a fruit bowl, a sugar bowl, or a milk jug look wonderful on the breakfast table. Placemats give each place setting a nice frame and also protect the table from minor mishaps.
