Setting up a small bathroom: How to create more space
Do you have a small bathroom with just a few square meters? No problem. Make your mini-bathroom bigger, more beautiful, and more inviting. Here’s how – even without a bathroom planner.
Don’t further divide a small bathroom.
Openness is essential for anyone with a small bathroom. Therefore, avoid further dividing it with additional spaces. A fully tiled bathroom with an open shower will instantly appear much larger. You should also avoid furniture placed across the space, as it tends to create barriers in small or narrow bathrooms. Instead, boldly emphasizing the floor plan will visually guide you into the room upon entering, making a small bathroom feel much more inviting.
Ideally, use your small bathroom solely as a shower room. A fully tiled shower area appears much larger than a bathroom with a built-in bathtub. Lightweight partition walls that house the water pipes and sink are also ideal for small bathrooms. These partition walls can also be used to create niches for the shower. Small, existing niches can be easily transformed into towel and toiletries storage areas with a few shelves, increasing storage space without the need for additional furniture.
Wood makes small bathrooms feel more homely.
And another tip: Natural materials like stone and wood make a small bathroom feel inviting and comfortable. Larch wood is ideal for bathrooms because it’s naturally water-repellent. To essentially prevent water stains, an additional protective layer of wood oil is recommended. Another advantage of wood: The light-colored surfaces visually expand the room, making a small bathroom appear larger.

Decorating a small bathroom
When it comes to decorating small bathrooms, less is more. Focus on a few carefully chosen accents: accessories bring coziness to the toilet. Natural materials like cotton, linen, or wood, beautiful textiles, plenty of natural light, and soft, muted colors are pleasing to the senses. When all the colors of furnishings and accessories are coordinated, visual calm prevails – small details like pretty flowers, high-quality soaps, or a picture on the wall take center stage and give the room personality. Your nose also deserves a treat: subtle, pleasant fragrances from candles or aroma lamps create a sense of well-being.
Order in the small bathroom
In small bathrooms, only include items you genuinely love and use regularly. Group these together in simple baskets, boxes, or on trays for a much more organised look – and they’re always within easy reach. Transfer toiletries with unattractive packaging into uniform pump dispensers and jars. This creates a cohesive look. A vanity unit provides additional hidden storage without taking up much space.
