Furnishing the bedroom in a minimalist style

Neutral colors, clean lines, and natural, light textiles: A subtly designed bedroom is the perfect place to relax. We offer tips for creating a retreat that offers maximum rest in a minimalist style.

Minimalism helps you switch off better.

In the bedroom, we want to find peace, leave the stress of everyday life behind, and above all, sleep well. Therefore, the bedroom should be a room that offers as little stimulation as possible. Clutter, busy patterns, bulky furniture, electronic devices like televisions, or simply too much clutter can be detrimental.

A minimalist bedroom promotes more tranquility and, consequently, more energy after a restful night. Following the KonMari philosophy, it is recommended to surround yourself with fewer things that bring you joy and enhance your well-being, and to opt for a minimalist design in the bedroom.

Only the essentials should remain.

Before you begin, consider what you truly need in your bedroom. After all, the room's primary purpose is to be a place to sleep. However, many people also need to accommodate a workspace and storage for clothes and other belongings. Therefore, start by taking stock of what you already have, carefully consider what is essential to your daily routine, and then find a designated spot for it. Where possible, eliminate unnecessary clutter that creates visual clutter. This could include books you've finished reading, haphazardly placed decorations, or even medications on your nightstand that you no longer need. Keep the walls as clear as possible as well.

Limit yourself to a few colors.

A minimalist bedroom avoids bright colors. Instead, opt for neutral, light tones like white or gray; beige tones such as sand or cream add warmth. Those who still want color can incorporate soft pastel shades like mint, pink, or yellow, or create bold pops of color with desaturated hues like terracotta or khaki.

When it comes to furniture, less is more.

The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom and should therefore occupy most of the space. For a restful night's sleep, both design and function are equally important. A classic frame made of light wood or fabric – naturally with a comfortable mattress and a good slatted base – is unobtrusive and doesn't block much light. Tip: With darker frames, choosing light, neutral bedding is even more crucial. Nightstands can quickly become overwhelming in a minimalist bedroom. If you can't do without one, it's best to choose a small, simple model or attach a small wall shelf next to the headboard – this also keeps the floor clear.

Additional furniture should be chosen carefully for a minimalist bedroom. A wardrobe is often unavoidable, but it shouldn't be too bulky and should also be in suitable, light colors. The fewer clothes you own, the easier storage will be. A clothes rail, for example, creates a particularly airy feel – provided it's not overloaded and only holds neutral garments. A small chest of drawers then completes the clothing storage solution.

Working from home in the bedroom isn't ideal, but it can't always be avoided. To minimize distractions, choose a small desk and chair, plan for sufficient storage for cables and other work materials, keep the room strictly tidy, and remove electronic devices from the room before sleeping.

Cleverly plan storage space

Speaking of storage space: To keep your bedroom tidy, you need sufficient closed storage. Even if you own very little, clothes, bedding, cosmetics, seasonal items, and travel gear like suitcases need to be stored. Hidden solutions are ideal for this, for example, under the bed, behind the bedroom door, or in simple baskets and chests. Multifunctional furniture is also a great idea. It allows you to store unnecessary items and generally reduces the number of furniture pieces needed.

Natural materials promote well-being.

The concept of lightness inherent in minimalist living applies not only to the look but also to the feel. Natural materials not only look more purist but also feel lighter and more pleasant. Wood for furniture and floors, linen and cotton for bedding, and wool and jute for rugs and baskets are ideal and enhance well-being. This is by no means boring – after all, the various natural textures provide visual interest.

Reduced decoration and a few patterns

When it comes to minimalist style, use decorations sparingly. The clean, neutral look should be reflected not only in the furnishings but also in the accessories. One or two large wall paintings with minimalist motifs are therefore preferable to a gallery wall with countless pictures, posters, and postcards. Instead of scattered decorations, opt for a carefully placed candle or plants. And mirrors should be strategically positioned opposite a blank wall to avoid visual clutter. We advise against small-scale patterns on textiles like curtains, as they can be visually overwhelming.
